The honest answer

What painting a house
actually costs in London.

Painting the whole interior of a house in London costs between £3,500 and £16,000+ depending on size, ceiling height, condition and specification. A typical three-bedroom Victorian terrace — walls, ceilings and all woodwork, two coats throughout — is usually £5,000–£9,000 + VAT.

The biggest cost drivers are the amount of woodwork (skirting, doors, windows, banisters and panelling take far longer than walls), ceiling height and cornicing, how much preparation is needed (cracks, old paper, flaking paint), whether the house is occupied and furnished, and the paint — premium brands like Farrow & Ball cost more per litre but don't change the labour much.

Tom Harvey Contractors quotes whole houses room by room as a fixed lump sum after a free site visit, so you can see exactly what each room costs and choose what to include.

Common questions

Your questions
answered.

A full interior repaint of a three-bedroom house in London — every room, ceilings, walls and woodwork, two coats — typically costs £5,000–£9,000 + VAT. A modern house with low ceilings and little woodwork sits at the lower end; a Victorian terrace with high ceilings, cornicing and lots of joinery sits at the upper end.
Professional decorators in London charge £200–£300 per day, or £85 per hour for small jobs at Tom Harvey. For whole houses we don't work on day rates — we quote a fixed lump sum room by room so the price can't creep.
A standard bedroom or living room — walls, ceiling and woodwork, two coats — costs £450–£900 + VAT depending on size, ceiling height and woodwork. Walls only is less; a room with panelling, sash windows and cornicing is more.
Our quotes include quality trade paint (Dulux Trade, Johnstone's or Crown Trade) as standard. If you'd like Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or another premium brand, we price the upgrade as a separate line — it typically adds £300–£900 to a whole house.
A two-bedroom house takes 5–8 working days with a team of two. A three- or four-bedroom house takes 8–14 days. Large period houses with heavy prep and hand-painted joinery take 3–5 weeks. We agree the programme at quote stage.
Yes — most of our house repaints are in occupied homes. We work room by room, seal the work area, use dust extraction, keep tools out of reach of children and clean up every day. Bedrooms are done in sequence so everyone always has somewhere to sleep.
Yes — an empty house is 15–25% quicker to paint because nothing needs moving or protecting and we can work across all rooms at once. If you can give us the keys between completion and moving day, it's the best time to do it.
Yes — exterior render, masonry, sash windows and front doors are quoted separately because access is the main cost. See our exterior painting page or ask for both on the same site visit.
