The honest answer

Why premium paint needs
a decorator who knows it.

Farrow & Ball and Little Greene are bought for their depth of colour and chalky, flat finishes — and those same qualities make them less forgiving than trade paint. Estate Emulsion marks easily and needs the right primer and undercoat tinted to the topcoat; Modern Emulsion and Intelligent Matt are more durable but still need proper preparation to look their best.

The cost difference is mostly the paint itself — Farrow & Ball costs around three to four times a trade emulsion per litre — plus a little extra time for the tinted undercoat and the care needed at cutting-in. On a two-bedroom flat the upgrade typically adds £400–£900 to a standard repaint.

Tom Harvey Contractors provides free site visits and itemised written quotes within 48 hours, and we'll advise honestly on where premium paint makes a difference and where a trade equivalent will do the same job.

Common questions

Your questions
answered.

On a typical two-bedroom flat, Farrow & Ball or Little Greene adds around £400–£900 + VAT to a standard repaint — mostly the paint itself, plus a little extra labour for tinted undercoats. On a single room it adds roughly £100–£200. We buy at trade price and show the paint as a separate line.
Yes — we buy through trade accounts and pass the saving on. You can also supply your own paint if you've already bought it; either way we'll tell you exactly how many litres are needed.
Estate Emulsion is the classic chalky, very flat finish with the deepest colour — beautiful but not washable, so it suits bedrooms, living rooms and ceilings. Modern Emulsion is washable and more durable, better for hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and family homes. Little Greene's Intelligent Matt is the equivalent durable option.
Yes. Farrow & Ball recommend their own tinted Primer & Undercoat under the topcoat, and it matters — it gives true colour in two coats and stops patchiness. Little Greene and Paint & Paper Library have equivalents. We always use the manufacturer's system.
Colour matches exist, but they don't reproduce the depth and finish that make these paints worth buying — the pigments and the sheen level are different. If budget is the priority we'll recommend where a good trade paint will do, and where the original is worth it.
Modern Eggshell is the standard choice — a soft sheen that's hard-wearing and wipeable, ideal for skirting, doors and kitchens. Full Gloss gives a traditional high-shine finish. Dead Flat is a very matt finish for walls and woodwork together in period rooms.
Yes — we'll bring the colour cards to the site visit and paint sample patches so you can see them in your light before committing. We work with these ranges every week and know which colours behave well in north-facing London rooms.
Yes — Farrow & Ball Exterior Masonry and Exterior Eggshell, and Little Greene's exterior ranges, on render, stucco, sash windows and front doors. We prepare the surface properly first so the finish lasts.

Chosen your colours? Let's do them justice.
